[edit] Plot

Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.

Grace Andrews (Sophia Bush) and Jim Halsey (Zachary Knighton) are tormented by a mysterious hitchhiker named John Ryder, a.k.a. The Hitcher (Sean Bean).

The young couple hit the road in a 1970 Oldsmobile 442, on route to spring break. Ryder dangerously stands on the road, near his car, which apparently has broken down. After passing they worry that they might have hit him. However, they do not want to check it out and give him a ride, because the man could be a criminal.

Later they meet him at a gas station, and he asks Jim for a ride. Reluctantly Jim agrees. In the car he turns out be a psychopath. Ryder threatens to kill Grace if Jim does not say that he wants to die. Jim manages to throw Ryder out of the car.

Later Jim and Grace see Ryder as passenger in another car, with a couple and two children, a boy and a girl. Jim drives alongside to warn the family for Ryder, not properly watching the traffic. A truck from the opposite direction almost crashes into them. In evading this the car ends up wrecked off the road.

Jim and Grace continue on foot and see the family's car, with the father dying and the mother and two children already dead. They drive the car trying to save the father. Ryder shows up driving a truck and unsuccessfully tries to run them off the road. They stop at a cafe. The father dies here. While Grace is in the toilet Ryder shows up there, but disappears again. Jim and Grace are arrested, suspected of the killings, and brought to the police station. There Ryder shows up and kills all three policemen. Jim and Grace take a gun and flee on foot.

A policeman arrives and tries to arrest them, but with the gun they manage to prevent that and take his gun. From some distance Ryder kills the policeman. The couple takes the policecar, and is chased by police in three cars and a helicopter, suspecting Jim and Grace of killing the policeman. Ryder appears and shoots at the police, who all crash and die.

The couple sneaks into a motel room and take a shower. While Jim is out to make a phone call at a payphone (the phone in the room only works through the front desk) Ryder shows up and there is a fight with Grace.

Ryder disappears and captures Jim, and ties him between a truck and its trailer. Grace, armed with a gun from the police station, finds Ryder seated in a truck, ready to tear Jim in half by moving it. Grace threatens to shoot him if he hurts Jim, but Ryder indicates that the truck will move if she kills him. He insists that she does so anyway, just as the police arrives. Grace is unable to kill Ryder. He swears: "what a waste", and moves the truck, killing Jim.

Ryder is taken into custody and Grace is brought to the police station for examination. During the transportation, Ryder manages to escape and kill the police force, resulting in the police car crashing. Grace and the police chief, who have been following behind, are caught in the crash. Grace decides to kill Ryder herself because "[she]'s done running", but he traps her inside the crashed police vehicle, firing at the leaking gas to make it explode.

Ryder kills the police chief while Grace manages to grab a dead police's shotgun and escape from the vehicle just after it explodes. While Ryder walks away, she shoots him in the back and in the chest, wounding him. She approaches him and aims the shotgun at his head. He says to her "Feels good, doesn't it? ", but she replies with "I don't feel a thing" before shooting him in the head, killing him.

Grace walks off the screen as the credits begin to roll.
